Second-Life Graduate Art Show

So after my last post talking about my graduate art show in Second-Life, I figured I would show just what exactly I was talking about. After finally finding out how to record footage with SL, I went and recorded a tour of the Atec Island gallery with my show in it. The first two levels hold stills from my videos, and the 3rd floor is where you watch the videos. There are 3 different video feeds which each showing two different video paintings. The two on the sides are just visual, but the center video has audio with them. To hear the audio you will to log in to SL, but at least you will be able to get a little of the feel for what I was trying to accomplish. Let me know what you think.

So I guess you can tell that I have some new post up using a new video host. Lately youtube has been pissing me off once again. Don't get me wrong. It's fine if your up-loading normal video footage, but for some of the stuff I work on mainly my video paintings, it's not so great. One of the reasons I found out is, that with normal video footage, your not each frame hasn't been altered so you can compress it to play fine, but with my video paintings, I manipulate the footage so much with the filters I use from After Effects, that each of the films frames are changing. So with this when you try to compress the footage, it doesn't look as good as it does uncompressed. Now that is only one problem. Other problems are either the video not being able to be up-loaded or up-loading a 3-minute piece and it only playing for 15 seconds. So what is the answer? Start looking for a new hosting site. Well luckily from a lot of the research I've done by reading many different blogs and watch many videocast. I have found a few. One that I'm testing at the moment is called Blip.TV. So far it's not bad. The quality of the videos on blip, from what I can tell looks much better than youtube’s. So I've put up short clips of three of my videos to see how they look. Aside from the film having to take a sec to download and the video screen being a little larger than youtube's (which that can be fixed changing up the blog's script a bit) it's seems to be doing so far. I've decided to change how I'm going start show my video paintings on here. I'm going to cut the clips down to 45 seconds - 1 minute so that people just a get a small taste of what I do and save the full versions for more on special occasions such as art show, etc. Well see how it goes.

GameScapes . Videogame Landscapes

I keep up with a lot of other new media artist blogs to see what they have all been up to and see what I might be able to learn from. One of the artists that I really like is Cory Archangel. He's been around for a bit. He recently posted a blog about a show they did in Milan, Italy. The show was called GamesScapes. It's basically a show dealing with videogame art. I really found this interesting since all of my art lately has been video game related.

The Next Step

So my next project has finally been started. One of the things I wanted to do for Dean's class was start a Video blog TV show. Sort of in the same endeavor as shows like Rocket-boom or Ask a Ninja. The only problem was doing a video cast that I would enjoy doing that people would want to watch. I started going through ideas, but I just couldn’t come up with the really great one. Then it hit me. Anybody that knows me knows that I am a huge geek. So of course I would have friends along that same path. Well when we go out, our conversations can tend to get way out there. We will have those moments that you just wish you had a camera for. Well we may not have a camera, but man we sure as hell gain ideas to use for what I think will be a quite funny show, or so we hope. The host will be my friend Brian. He is the one who recorded this clip that I have blogged here. I will be taken part in the show also. It will consist of minor skits mixed with our weird rants on the topic of pop-culture that we have chosen for that week. The main thought of the show is more so what if you were to lock a group of monkeys in a room with typewriters and give them all joints and 40’s. which is the description Brian has given for how thoughts are processed within my head. The name we have for our new show is Shanked TV. This clip that you are watching here, is not really of the show, but will just give a small hint of how I these some of our ideas are given life. Ok, for those of you that may have had some problems viewing the newest video, here is what to do. I know that it takes a while to up-load and that it stops moving after a few seconds. Let it fully download and then hit play. When it stops, drag the play nob just a little bit forward, and then you should be able to finish viewing the rest of the movie. Sorry for the problems. This was the first time I tried up-loading an Mpeg-4 instead of just using compressor to get the file small enough. I have to more about ready to go up and hopefully I'll have better luck with them.

Tattoo

So about two years ago, I had the idea of working on a documentary on the topic of body modifications: tattoos, piercings, scarring, etc. Well the project was started, but never finished. School and time became and issue for me and the person I was working with at the time. Plus I was having problems meeting with the people I was suppose to film (the would schedule a time, but then always cancel. I have always been fascinated with Tattoos, and so the documentary was something I was really into making. I figured that it would be something I could come back to at a later date, but now do to television shows like TLC's Miami Ink (which I am an avid fan of) the whole issue of modify your body has already been hit. So here I have this footage of people being tattooed, but I don't have a project to use it in. So after viewing a few different pieces of video art, I decided to just experiment with the footage (experiment, who me). I decided I would try to show the progression of a tattoo using the footage that I had. Maybe try to create something artistic. Well this is just something small I came up with. I do have ideas of going back and working on the documentary idea, but more based on just tattoos alone, I will probably be something just to do for myself.

Kata #2

Naming the video Kata, I almost think people will think they are going to be watching someone practice their karate. Anyways, this is another version of the last one video I posted. I felt that Kata #1 still looked like people could tell what it was, so I messed with the video some more. I'm not sure how I feel about this one. I keep watching it and keep thinking of a kaleidoscope. It's interesting, but I'm so far from being done. I mean hell the video is going to be the easy part. Adding the audio is going to be the challenge.

Role

Well it's been a while. This is the last thing I wanted to happen with this vlog. I didn't start this project just so I can go around like others and say I have a blog, and then never touch it again. I plan on actually pushing this vlog. I will say that the lack of updating has been my fault. I have just been so drained the last couple of weeks. Work has been hectic; then again what else is to be expected the last two weeks on a campus before classes start. That plus, to be honest, I have just haven't had the drive lately to work on anything. Whether it is here at school or at home, everytime I wanted to start something, I just couldn't bring myself to pick up my camera. I was starting to worry that I might be losing my passion for doing my video art, but thankfully I can say that's not the case. I'm just tired of life right now and just a chance to recharge. I've decided not to wait for that. I'm going to just jump right back into the scheme of things and start busting my ass on new pieces. I know that really is the only way to do. Plus I think I'm staring to get the creative bug again, and not a moment to soon since school starts here in a day and a half.

So the piece I have here is one I'm not really sure where I'm going with it yet. I'm still working on it. I’m naming it Kata at the moment. If you’re a true gamer you should recognize it.

Pissed Off!

So since last Friday I've been fighting with youtube. For some reason, it's not accepting a few of my videos, and I can't figure out why. I've gone back and tried altering them a bit and even tried to up-load them from a new machine. The only thing I can think of is maybe it's not taking them due to a filter I might have used from After Affects. All I can say is that I'm getting really pissed off that it will take some files but not others. I just created a google video account. If youtube continues to mess with me I thing I may end up trying google. The other answer is to try using QuickTime. I've been looking at a lot of different blogs, and many of them have it to where you click on the link of the movie and then it goes to another page to play the movie, and then you have to hit back to return to the blog. I would rather keep it where you are viewing the clip on the blog, but if I have to I will look into other methods.

So video I can do, but audio is something totally different. I took a sound design class last semester, and I did learn a lot, but I still have a long way to go. The class has helped in working on audio for my video paintings, which is a very good thing since everyone tells me that they need sound. Well this video was my group’s final project for the class. We took a clip from cartoon networks Samurai Jack and did our own soundtrack for it. Let me know what you think.

So video games have become the focus of my new art. I've been coming up with some pretty good stuff. I even have a video called Drac playing at the Continental Gallery at the Continental Lofts in Deep Ellum till August 3rd. The video I'm showing here is just to give an idea of what I've been working on lately. It's not really that great of a piece, just a test piece I’ve used to give me ideas. I’ve started using old 8-bit Nintendo games so far, though the play is to move to 3d gamecube and PS2 games later. The really good news is that some people that have seen my work want me to write up a proposal for a possible show. So if things go right, I will have my first solo exhibition early next year. So with all that said, enjoy.

So this is just an experimental piece I was working on. My other works video paintings, but video art encompasses a vast majority ore than just that. I collected these Godzilla clips a while ago, and wanted to do something with them. So after exploring through a lot of art via the internet, I just figured I would through these clips into Final Cut and just have it. So if you enjoy cool. If you get a laugh out of it, awesome. If you just end up think that it's stupid cool to, like I said, I just messing around to see what I might come up with.

So I've been working on trying to clean up my computer her at school. I have so many projects and files on it that I need to start freeing up some drive space. So going through everything, I found the old QuickTime movies of when I first started experimenting with video art. My first attempts were working with footage I shot at the aquarium. I've been going there for quite some time and I could just find myself lost in just how certain creatures would move, such as stingrays. I would watch them and wonder what I might be able to do with video footage of these animals. So I've decided to put some of my early stuff up. Now don't go thinking that this stuff is anything I consider great, these are just pieces that I tried my hand to get feedback on what I was doing and to help get to where I now.

So for the last couple of months I've been struggling with exactly where I want to go with my video art. I have come to the conclusion that I don't want to give up doing other video projects, but I defiantly want to keep doing video art. I enjoy it and love doing it, and I want to see just how far I can take it. So instead of just have a blog that is dedicated to either short films that I might want to shoot, or new video paintings that I am working on, this blog will be a mixture. Probably for the most part it will be a lot on the video art that I will be working on, but it will also be open to me just posting ideas about short films, possible documentary ideas or just random video shit that I come up with. So sit back and if you actually take the time to read this blog, then maybe you might learn a little bit about the crap that goes on in this head of mine about video.
